    What Actually Matters

    Structure, Not Decoration

Headings are a document outline, not a font-size menu. When someone picks an H4 because it "looked right", the outline breaks — and the people who depend on it lose their way through your page.

    • One H1 — HTML5 allows more, but one states clearly what the page is
    • No skipped levels — H2 to H4 leaves a gap screen readers can't bridge
    • Never empty — a heading with no text is invisible structure
    • Reasonably short — a heading longer than a sentence isn't a heading

    The upgrade worth making

Once the structure is valid, phrase headings as the questions people actually search. "Pricing" becomes "How much does it cost?" — which gives search and AI engines a clean question-and-answer pair to match and quote.

    FAQ

    Heading Questions

Can a page have more than one H1?
HTML5 permits it and Google handles it fine. One H1 is still better: it states unambiguously what the page is about, and it's what screen reader users rely on to orient themselves. Multiple H1s usually signal a template problem, not a decision.
Do skipped heading levels hurt SEO?
Not a direct ranking problem, but an accessibility failure — screen reader users navigate by level, and a gap breaks the outline. It usually also means headings are chosen for visual size rather than structure, which weakens machine interpretation.
    Should headings contain keywords?
Headings should describe the section honestly — natural phrasing usually contains the keyword anyway. Forcing terms into every heading reads badly and gains nothing. More useful: phrase them as the questions people search.
